Lord of the Rings locations map

Get a map with the exact locations of places from the Lord of the Rings pointed out, so that you can easily find them; only easily accessible locations included.

Not all of the locations from the Lord of the Rings movie can be accessed just by driving to them.

Some locations require a helicopter to reach or a long walk.

Below I’ve listed only those locations from the Lord of the Rings movie that do not require a helicopter to reach.

You may still have to drive and walk, but they can be reached without spending any extra money; just petrol and physical energy.

The coordinates of the locations shown on the map were taken from The Lord of the Rings Location Guidebook by Ian Brodie.

The guidebook provides background information on LOTR locations and on New Zealand as well as directions on how to get to the locations.

While the guidebook contains maps, it does not have a map with all of the locations pointed out on it. Instead, coordinates for the locations have been given in some instances.

About Lord of the Rings locations

While the top of Mount Victoria in Wellington is not a Lord of the Rings location, the forest (Outer Shire) around the hill is.

The forest can smell very nice on a hot summer day. However, if you are visiting Wellington and in particular the forest, do not forget to go up to the top of Mount Victoria to enjoy the view.

Edoras can be visited by foot these days, meaning that the Department of Conservation has built a trail that leads to Mount Sunday, so there is no need to enjoy the view from afar anymore.

Edoras is located in Hakatere Conservation Park and can be reached by car by driving on the Hakatere Potts Road.

Isengard and Lothlorien are two locations not far from Glenorchy that are somewhat difficult to reach. To reach them, you would have to drive on the road to Paradise, which is a dirt road, and which becomes narrow the farther you get.

If you do decide to go there, it might be best to rent a 4WD car and be aware that you may have to ford streams. A more leisurely way to enjoy the views in the area would be to take a Dart River tour so go by boat.

You can also find information about and get a long list of places that are located on land managed by the Department of Conservation and that were used in the Lord of the Rings movie.
