Queenstown Motel Apartments review – a Queenstown New Zealand motel
Read about how I experienced my stay at Queenstown Motel Apartments near Queenstown city center and in which areas this motel excels compared to other Queenstown motels and hotels.
As mentioned in my Traveling to Queenstown in June 2010 article, I was going to try out a Queenstown motel I had never stayed at before for the first time.
I also wrote then that I’d tell you where I stayed, which I’m going to do right now in this article.
I’m aware that looking for accommodation in Queenstown can be quite overwhelming at times because of the huge amount of hotels and motels in the city you’ll sometimes not know where to stay. Too much choice can paralyze you sometimes…
So I hope this article will help simplify the process when you’re looking to choose one of the better motels or hotels in Queenstown.
I’m always wary about booking more than 3 nights with any hotel or motel I’m unfamiliar with, because if they turn out to be a total dump, I’m stuck with them for a long period of time.
However, I took a risk this time and booked 7 nights with Queenstown Motel Apartments, not knowing what to expect. I basically spent my entire vacation there and must say that I was not disappointed.
The cancellation policy of Queenstown Motel Apartments was a minimum of 14 days notice, which is pretty long, to be totally honest. A more common length of cancellation time is 1 – 3 days advance notice. But with the 2 weeks advance cancellation notice came a one night’s stay charge on no-shows or late cancellation, which is reasonable for Queenstown, unlike other motels which may charge you the entire stay.
Queenstown Motel Apartments, Queenstown, New Zealand
Queenstown Motel Apartments is a 4+ star Qualmark-rated motel near Queenstown city center, and is located on the fairly busy highway 6A that eventually winds up in Queenstown city center.
Needless to say, you’ll have to contend with some traffic noise coming from the streets, especially if you’re staying in one of the rooms closer to the road and during peak traffic hours of 7 to 9 a.m. and 5 to 7 p.m.
Queenstown Motel Apartments is about a 5-minute walk into town from where it is situated. It is close enough to Queenstown city center that I was able to enjoy the fireworks of the Queenstown Winter Festival from the window of my motel room, but not too close to get too much noise from the busy city center.
Upon arrival, I was greeted cordially by the host. After signing in, she offered milk – which is standard practice at most motels – and then continued on to ask whether I had been to Queenstown before and/or required any information and a map of Queenstown.
Then I was shown to my room, which was an upstairs room with number 10 on the door. While there aren’t any windows in this room facing the interesting part of Lake Wakatipu where you can see the Remarkables and Cecil Peak, as you step out the door of room number 10, the first view you get is that of the Remarkables right in front of you. The window of room number 10 faces the Skyline, Ben Lomond, and Queenstown city center.
Since there aren’t any elevators you can use, please beware that it can be challenging to get your luggage (if you have lots of it) up the stairs. If you stay at Queenstown Motel Apartments and don’t want to walk up stairs, it might be best to ask whether there is a downstairs room available when you make your reservation.
As I entered the room for the very first time, what struck me immediately was that it was tastefully decorated and would be very pleasant for me to stay in. Please note that Queenstown Motel Apartments also has budget rooms available. Room number 10 was not a budget room. While I have not seen the budget rooms at Queenstown Motel Apartments, my experience is that budget rooms in New Zealand are older rooms that are kept clean, and which you may want to consider staying in if you’re not going to spend too much time in the room. Please be aware of this fact when booking accommodation in New Zealand.
Everything in the room was functional. I very much liked the bathroom, which was of a generous size, and the shower which produced a nice constant flow of warm/hot water. I also liked the fact that there were many power points in the room – something almost all motels/hotels tend to quickly run out of. However, what I did miss was an electric blanket on the bed, which would have come in very handy since Queenstown experiences subzero temperatures at night during winter in New Zealand, so it was very cold when I was in Queenstown.
I’d say… where Queenstown Motel Apartments distinguish themselves from other Queenstown accommodation is that:
- They’re conveniently located not too close or too far from Queenstown city center;
- The motel rooms are well-maintained, clean, and a joy to spend time in;
- They have countless brochures you can pick from at the front desk;
- They know how to receive and treat guests to make them feel welcome;
- You can enjoy the iconic Queenstown views from this motel whether you’ve got a room with a view or not;
- The motel rooms have a desk with enough power points above it for you to be able to work on a laptop (as I often do) and recharge the batteries of your cameras. You won’t have a lack of power points as is often the case in many motels/hotels.
All in all, I enjoyed staying at Queenstown Motel Apartments, and would definitely stay there again.
