Spring is on its way in New Zealand

Written on Sunday, 29 August 2010 by NZTravelInsider

Read about the latest observations in weather and on location as New Zealand ends its winter season and starts its spring season.

A couple of weeks ago I started sneezing. Excessive sneezing and runny eyes generally tell me that spring is on its way.

The past week, temperatures have gone up considerably; so much so that people here in Wellington have started wearing T-shirts and skimpy clothes again.

Don’t let such clothing fool you, though. People here in New Zealand in general tend to do like it is summer when it is winter. But trust me on this one, it *is* getting warmer.

Two days ago I looked out the window of my apartment and saw flowers in bloom, which is definitely a sign that spring is coming. While winter is not over yet, it won’t be long more before spring arrives in its full glory.

Weather-wise, it has been raining a lot. Hopefully when spring arrives the weather systems that are currently being pushed across the Tasman Sea will die down.

    Hi,
I wonder if you can tell me if you know the best place to view the cherry blossom? Last year we went to Palmerston North, there is a Japaness international collegue, there are some cherry blossom trees alongside the small lake. This year we want to go some where else. Can you give us some advise?

    Cheers,
    Alice

Hi, I wonder if you know where is the best place to see the Cherry blossom in Wellington region. I went to the botanic gardens in town and Palmerston North last year, not quite happy with the view in terms of the scale. Can you give me some advise?

    Cheers,
    Alice

    Hi Alice,
Sorry for the late reply. Unfortunately, I have not yet had the opportunity to fully explore spring in New Zealand, so am unable to speak from experience, but I have researched it a bit, since I myself will be going hunting for blossoms this spring. I don’t know about the Wellington region, but if you don’t mind catching the ferry, there is a Japanese garden in Nelson; check out the Nelson City Council website. Other than that, your best bet would be gardens in places like Christchurch, Ashburton, and Dunedin. Hope this helps.
