Snow on Queenstown Hill and mountains around Lake Wakatipu

See a video of spectacular winter scenery around Queenstown with snow on the Remarkables and Cecil Peak set against the blue water of Lake Wakatipu as seen from Queenstown Hill.

Queenstown Hill Time walk is a 2-3 hour return walk up to a lookout on top of a 900+ meters hill near Queenstown city center.

It not only provides fantastic views of Lake Wakatipu and the mountains surrounding Lake Wakatipu (Cecil Peak, Walter Peak, The Remarkables, etc.), but also overlooks Kelvin Heights peninsula and Queenstown airport.

The following video was shot in June during winter in New Zealand, approximately 4 days after heavy snowfall. Snow does not often reach the ground in Queenstown, but on this particular occasion it did.

The trail of the Queenstown Hill Time walk is steep in many places. On the first part of the walk, you’ll go through a dark forest. It generally takes 45 – 60 minutes to get out of the forest and reach the Basket of Dreams.

Then once you’re in the clearing, it is a short 20 – 30 minutes to the lookout point where the following video was shot. After reaching the top, you could continue to follow the 4 wheel drive road and walk further, but please be aware that you’ll be walking on private property and please respect the owner’s land.

Queenstown Hill Time walk can be done in any season, and is ideal for snowshoeing after a day or two of heavy snowfall in Queenstown.
