Hawkdun Range and sheep, Central Otago, New Zealand
Photo of grazing sheep with a slightly snow-capped Hawkdun Range in the background in Central Otago, New Zealand.
Hawkdun Range is located in Central Otago, a region that is known for its sharp contrasts in seasons; it can get very hot in summer and very cold during winter in New Zealand.
The photo of Hawkdun Range and sheep shown below was shot in autumn. As you can see, there was a dust of snow on Hawkdun Range; an early sign of the winter to come.
What I like most about Central Otago is that you can drive for miles and miles and just see a whole lot of nothing: Wide open spaces, farmlands, tussock grasses, schist rock, spectacular scenery, mountains, and more mountains.
Follow highway 85 from Alexandra to pass along Hawkdun Range an get a glimpse of it. The best seasons to visit this area are autumn and winter.
